### Museums
- **[Apartheid Museum](https://www.apartheidmuseum.org/)** — Vast and absolutely unmissable. One of the best museum experiences I've had anywhere.
- **[Constitution Hill](https://www.constitutionhill.org.za/)** — Remarkable for its history: this was a prison site where both Gandhi and Mandela were held. It now serves as the seat of South Africa's Constitutional Court. The layering of those two facts in the same physical space is extraordinary.
### Neighborhoods
- **Soweto** — Several walking tour operators offer tours through the township. Worth it for the context it gives the rest of the city.
- **Maboneng** — A modern, revitalized neighborhood in the inner city. Interesting, but better suited for longer stays. If you only have one day in Joburg, these neighborhood options may not be the best use of time.
### Day Trips (car required)
- **[Pilanesberg National Park](https://www.pilanesbergnationalpark.org/)** — A more compact safari than Kruger, but still genuinely impressive. Maximum 4 hours from Johannesburg. A viable option if Kruger isn't on the itinerary.
- **[Cradle of Humankind / Maropeng](https://www.maropeng.co.za/)** — A museum and cave complex near the Sterkfontein Caves housing fossils of some of the earliest humans on Earth. Unusual and worth the detour.
- **[Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden](https://www.sanbi.org/gardens/walter-sisulu/)** — Within greater Johannesburg. Good for a half-day.
