# Effective Altruism (EA)
A philosophical and social movement that applies evidence and reason to determine the most effective ways to improve the world. EA uses cost-effectiveness analysis, counterfactual reasoning, and cause prioritization to direct resources (time, money, and talent) toward interventions that produce the greatest measurable impact per unit of investment.
- Cause areas traditionally prioritized: Global health and poverty, animal welfare, and existential risk reduction (AI safety, biosecurity, nuclear risk).
- Institutional ecosystem: [[GiveWell]] (charity evaluation), [[Coefficient Giving|Open Philanthropy]] (large-scale grantmaking), 80,000 Hours (career guidance), Centre for Effective Altruism, and the FTX Future Fund (now defunct after the 2022 collapse).
